The two day cadaveric masterclass returns to Newcastle with workshops, saw bone sessions and plenary talks hosted at St James Park, along side a cadaveric practical session hosted at The Newcastle Surgical Training Centre.

Matt Dawson

North Cumbria & Newcastle

Mr. Matt Dawson is an orthopaedic surgeon based in the North of England, specialising in sports injuries, degenerative conditions, and osteotomy surgery. He has performed over 1,000 osteotomies and 2,000 knee replacements and has played a key role in advancing knee realignment surgery. Through his courses and international lectures, he has trained thousands of surgeons. He was chair of the ESSKA Osteotomy Committee (2019–2022) and led a landmark international consensus study in KSSTA. Mr. Dawson continues to drive research, education, and innovation in osteotomy surgery.

Matt Dawson

David Elson is consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Gateshead. He completed UK knee surgery fellowships with soft tissue and osteotomy surgeons: Matt Dawson, Chris Wilson, Adrian Wilson. He strongly believes that the techniques of knee osteotomy should be refined in light of patient outcomes and to this aim he has been driving the United Kingdom Knee Osteotomy Registry, which is an initiative designed to capture meaningful outcome data which should influence future surgical techniques in years to come. He has several publications in the field of knee surgery and has presented at national and international conferences. Currently early years representative on the BASK executive committee. He has aspirations to improve the message about knee osteotomy as a highly successful surgery for appropriately selected cases.

Mr Sweed is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in knee surgery and lower limb sports injuries. His NHS practice is at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. His elective practice covers all areas of knee surgery with a special interest in knee osteotomies (realignment surgery), partial and total knee replacement, and ligament reconstruction. Mr Sweed graduated from medical school at Alexandria University in Egypt in 2001. He completed his orthopaedic training at Alexandria University and moved to the UK in 2013. He obtained his FRCS Trauma and Orthpaedics in 2016 and has since completed specialist fellowship training in knee surgery at several prestigious institutions.

Here he has begun a modern osteotomy practice, and monitors patient outcomes closely using Patient Reported Outcome Measures, utilising national registries for ligament reconstruction and osteotomy. Alongside these procedures, he is focussed on knee preservation, aiming to repair meniscal injuries wherever possible to retain their function.
